Smartphones are getting fancier and more powerful by the day. Thankfully too, you will be able to walk away with a brand new phone without breaking the bank.

In this post, we have compiled the top 10 list of smartphones under 500 selling on the Ghanaian market. Some brands are well-known brands while others are new players. Nonetheless, these are all great budget smartphones to own.

Infinix Hot 2

Sporting a sharp display, a clean interface, a smooth operation and a surprisingly good enough battery, the Infinix Hot 2 is a great budget smartphone to have.

Design

The back covering of the Infinix Hot 2 comes in 5 different colour finishes: black, white, red, blue and gold. However, the front always has a black finish. Both the volume and the power buttons are sited on the right side of the screen. The sim and memory slots can only be accessed after removing the back cover and taking out the battery.

Display

The screen display of the Hot 2 is pretty sharp. The Hot 2’s 5-inch high definition display has a screen resolution of 720p.

Camera

The picture and video quality is pretty decent. It has an 8-megapixel back camera and a 2-megapixel front camera.

Performance

It is easier to multitask using the 2GB memory variant of the Hot 2 compared with the other that only has 1GB. Running less resource-intensive apps should be pretty snappy. It may struggle to run higher end apps and games especially on the 1GB variant. The Hot 2 is not weighed down by many bloatware apps. Some preinstalled apps can even be uninstalled.

Storage

With an internal storage of 16GB and a maximum memory of 2GB, the storage capability is decent. The maximum supported MicroSD memory of 32GB is also decent.

Battery

At 2200mAh, the battery power does not look like a lot but it can last a good 7 hours when web surfing on 3G not so intensively.

Infinix Hot 3

For a budget smartphone, the Hot 3 holds its own as a phone to get if you looking for a big screen phone that has very good display, plays good sound and can smoothly handle most apps. It is a good bargain.

Design

While the front of the Infinix Hot 3 always has a black finish, the back coverings of the Infinix Hot 3 comes in 5 different colour flavours: gray, white, pink, blue and gold. The back covering also has a textured finish making it easier to hold. Both the volume and the power buttons are sited on the right side of the screen while the sim and memory slots are only accessible by removing the battery. Surprisingly, the Back, Home, and Menu buttons, sited outside the display screen are not back-lit.

Display

The Infinix Hot 3 has a 5.5-inch screen and the same screen resolution of 720p as the Hot 2. Even though this means that with a bigger screen, the Hot 3 has less pixel density than the Hot 2, the difference is hardly perceivable using the naked eye.

Camera

As it is marketed as a “Selfie Phone”, the Hot 3’s camera packs a number of fun features such as Smile recognition, voice recognition, and front camera flash. Performance-wise, the front camera is not impressive for picture taking. The back camera does quite a good job at taking pictures though.

Performance

Unlike the Hot 2 which is built on Android one, the Hot 3 interface is built on XUI. The aim for using XUI was to improve the speed, battery life and display of the phone. Generally the phone handles apps and games pretty smoothly. Text and image display on the HOt 3 is also very sharp. You should do well to get the 2GB memory version as the performance difference between this and the 1GB variant, on resource-intensive apps, is quite obvious. Popular social apps like Whatsapp, Twitter and Facebook are pre-installed. Also unlike the Hot 2, the Hot 3 is “plagued” by bloatware.

Storage

An internal storage of 16GB and a maximum memory of 2GB is decent to have on a budget smartphone like the Hot 3. Some users may find its maximum supported MicroSD memory of 32GB limiting.

Audio

The Hot 3 has impressive sound quality. Located at the back of the phone, the speaker produces rich loud pleasing audio. Even when the phone is placed faceup on a hard flat surface the sound comes out well without sounding muffled. The phone does not have so much bass “boom” though.

Battery

The Hot 3 boasts a 3000mAh battery and it can even be used to charge other phones. The battery life performance is fairly decent, lasting about 7 hours to a whole day depending on the intensity of use.

Samsung Galaxy Core Prime

Summary

The Samsung Galaxy Core Prime is a good addition to the budget smartphone market. It is a comfortable single-handed 4G smartphone that takes vibrant sunlit photos, has big space for expandable storage, and is equipped with a strong battery.

For the full review, see cnet.com and techradar.com.

Design

The body of the Core Prime is all plastic. Colour options for the phone are in two flavours, black and gray. The design of the Core Prime is not unique from many other Galaxy phones in its era. From the physical home button at the front to the rounded edge, the looks are very familiar. The phone is compact and is easy to handle with one hand.

Display

By current standards the Core Prime’s 4.5-inch screen is not so big. This however plays to the phone’s advantage as it feels comfortable to hold. At a screen resolution of 480 x 800 pixels, the screen is not as sharp and the display quality is in no way comparable to the what you get on Samsung’s flagship phones like the Galaxy S6.

Camera

Well known camera features you will find on the Core Prime include panorama, continuous shot, sports mode, ISO and metering, and geotagging. The 5 megapixel back camera takes brightly coloured outdoor photos which are very good for social media sharing. Indoor shot have the tendency to appear grainy but this defect can be compensated for, to some extent, using the phone’s in-built flash. Similarly, when using the front camera or the video camera, output is much better outdoors than indoors.

Performance

Using the phone is generally fluid when accessing menus and apps. There are some lags when opening and using an app like Camera. It doesn’t handle high-end games very well but you will have a responsive experience playing casual games.

Storage

The storage options on the Core Prime, 1GB memory plus 8GB internal storage, are decent. MicroSD support is up to 64GB.

Battery

The Core Prime’s 2000mAh battery does not look like much but it’s performance exceeds expectation. It should last you averagely 8 hours of full use. There are also several power saving options pre-installed on the phone.

A preinstalled optimisation app also helps you speed up the device and free up disk space.

Microsoft Lumia 535

Summary

The Microsoft Lumia 535 may be just the budget phone you are looking for. It is a hardy 5-inch screen phone which has a 5-megapixel wide angle front camera and vibrant colour options to choose from.

For the full review, see cnet.com and techradar.com.

Design

The Lumia 535 comes in five vibrant plastic shell coverings, in orange, green, white, black, gray, and blue. The back covering are easily swappable. By its dimensions, it is much easier using both hands when typing on the screen than using just one hand. The power and volume buttons are located on the right edges of the phone while the 3.5mm headphone jack is on the top edge.

To access to the sim slots you need to take out the battery first. But you need not remove the battery before inserting a memory card. The only obstruction is the back cover. The phone is built durable but it has the tendency to pick up lots of fingerprint and smears.

Display

The 5-inch screen on the Lumia 535 is conveniently for viewing video clips and photos. However, at a screen resolution of 960 x 540 pixels, the display lacks a high level of sharpness and texts can appear fuzzy. That notwithstanding, the screen is clear and basic apps are easily readable. Colours may appear washed out but the screen viewing angle is satisfactory.

Camera

The Lumia 535 has a 5-megapixel camera at the front and the back. The front camera can also take wide angle shots. The phone actually has two camera apps. The first, the Selfie app, lets you add various fun filters to your front camera shots. The second app is the Lumia camera app itself, which lets you change the typical camera settings like the resolution and the ISO. Although the shot-taking experience on the phone is snappy, the pictures themselves are just good for social media sharing. Video recordings are also good enough but not great. It’s best to take pictures and record videos in areas which have ample lighting with this phone.

Performance

Performance on the phone is generally fluid when running most apps. You might experience a few lags when running high graphical games and waking the phone from sleep.

Storage

The phone has 1GB of memory and 8GB of internal storage. This is just about the kind of storage you get on most budget smartphone. The Lumia also has a generous amount of expandable storage. The microSD slot supports up to 128GB.

Battery

The 1905mAh battery found on the Lumia 535 is fairly good. It can get you through the whole day with normal usage. Its also has a simple battery saver app.
