Smartphones are getting fancier and more powerful by the day. Thankfully too, you will be able to walk away with a brand new phone without breaking the bank.

In this post, we have compiled the top 10 list of smartphones under Kes 10,000 selling on in Kenya. Some brands are well-known brands while others are new players. Nonetheless, these are all great budget smartphones to own.

Infinix Hot 3

For a budget smartphone, the Hot 3 holds its own as a phone to get if you looking for a big screen phone that has very good display, plays good sound and can smoothly handle most apps. It is a good bargain.

Design

While the front of the Infinix Hot 3 always has a black finish, the back coverings of the Infinix Hot 3 comes in 5 different colour flavours: gray, white, pink, blue and gold. The back covering also has a textured finish making it easier to hold. Both the volume and the power buttons are sited on the right side of the screen while the sim and memory slots are only accessible by removing the battery. Surprisingly, the Back, Home, and Menu buttons, sited outside the display screen are not back-lit.

Display

The Infinix Hot 3 has a 5.5-inch screen and the same screen resolution of 720p as the Hot 2. Even though this means that with a bigger screen, the Hot 3 has less pixel density than the Hot 2, the difference is hardly perceivable using the naked eye.

Camera

As it is marketed as a “Selfie Phone”, the Hot 3’s camera packs a number of fun features such as Smile recognition, voice recognition, and front camera flash. Performance-wise, the front camera is not impressive for picture taking. The back camera does quite a good job at taking pictures though.

Performance

Unlike the Hot 2 which is built on Android one, the Hot 3 interface is built on XUI. The aim for using XUI was to improve the speed, battery life and display of the phone. Generally the phone handles apps and games pretty smoothly. Text and image display on the HOt 3 is also very sharp. You should do well to get the 2GB memory version as the performance difference between this and the 1GB variant, on resource-intensive apps, is quite obvious. Popular social apps like Whatsapp, Twitter and Facebook are pre-installed. Also unlike the Hot 2, the Hot 3 is “plagued” by bloatware.

Storage

An internal storage of 16GB and a maximum memory of 2GB is decent to have on a budget smartphone like the Hot 3. Some users may find its maximum supported MicroSD memory of 32GB limiting.

Audio

The Hot 3 has impressive sound quality. Located at the back of the phone, the speaker produces rich loud pleasing audio. Even when the phone is placed faceup on a hard flat surface the sound comes out well without sounding muffled. The phone does not have so much bass “boom” though.

Battery

The Hot 3 boasts a 3000mAh battery and it can even be used to charge other phones. The battery life performance is fairly decent, lasting about 7 hours to a whole day depending on the intensity of use.

Lenovo A1000

Lenovo A1000

Summary

The Lenovo A1000 is a decent phone that satisfies average performance requirements of daily usage. It also maintains a clean and familiar design with two colour options to choose from, namely white and black.

Design

This phone which was announced way back in September 2015 maintains the familiar design consistent with Chinese phones of that time era. The volume rocker and power button are sited on the right side of the screen. The speaker grill is also sited at the back below the usual primary camera. Compared with modern smartphones, the bezels appear rather thick. The Back, Home, and Menu buttons are found on the phone itself instead of on screen.

Display

The 4-inch screen found on this phone outputs a resolution of 400 x 800 pixels. Given the relatively smaller size of the phone the phone output the display at a 233 density per pixel is decent. It supports multitouch input of up to 2 fingers.

Camera

The camera on the A1000 is very basic. It will take decent shots but may not appeal so much to selfie-fans who like to have their pictures looking right on their social media-sharing sprees. You may have to look elsewhere if picture taking is your thing.

Performance

The Cortex-A7 outputs good performance for general use. Most apps will open and run quite fluidly but heavy usage and high graphical games can hamper the performance.

Storage

The storage on the A1000, which equals 1GB of ram and 8GB of internal storage, will hold up for many average users who use everyday apps like facebook, whatspp and basic games. Heavy app users might find the 8GB storage filled up in no time. The expandable storage of 32GB is a nice extension to help move infrequently used apps to the SD.

Battery

At 2000mAh the battery life on the A1000 is relatively small and may require daily charge even on average usage.

Innjoo Halo

Innjoo Halo

Summary

The Innjoo Halo is a good looking phone which has a good lasting battery, by Android standards, and a sizable storage for a budget phone. Overall camera and app performance is also good enough and it will be a great choice for anyone who wants an above average smartphone on the cheap.

Design

The Halo maintains a pretty design with nice thin bezels and a textured back cover. The volume and power buttons are located on the right side of the phone while the left side has the micro-USB charging port. The speaker grill is situated to the left side of the back camera.

Display

The 5-inch screen on the Innjoo Halo boasts 720 x 1280 resolution screen which is nice to see on a budget phone. The screen size is also good enough for watching videos.

Camera

The 5-megapixel back camera combined with the 2-megapixel from camera sets you for a decent picture taking experience. Don’t expect the picture output to impress so much.

Storage

The 1GB memory on this device is decent by today’s standards. The 16GB internal storage is rather good giving you have more room to install apps before you run out of space. The maximum supported SD card memory is 32GB.

Tecno L8

Tecno L8

Summary

With many budget smartphone manufacturers offering quite high-end specs as standard, the Tecno L8 does not disappoint in that vein. The overall design and performance on the L8 is good and will leave most users satisfied with their purchase. The stand-out feature on the L8 is its big battery which few budget smartphones out there can rival.

Design

The design of the Tecno L8 looks clean and quite elegant. But from our view it looks a bit too plain. On the design front, the L8 looks good, but does not wow us. Button placement is quite conventional, with the volume rocker plus power button on the right, audio jack at the top, charging port at the bottom, and speaker grill at the back.

Display

Like the Infinix Hot 4, the L8 has a 5.5-inch 720 x 1280 pixel screen. These are quite good specs to have, especially on a budget build, for videos, typing and gaming.

Camera

The camera on the L8 is conservative. The front camera is 2 megapixels capable and the back camera is 8 megapixels. The pictures should come out just fine.

Storage

Memory capacity on the L8 is 1GB. This is good enough although it will have been nice to have a 2GB option. The internal storage is also 16GB which is also good. The expandable storage allows a maximum SD card capacity of 64GB, which is plenty storage.

Battery

The standout spec on the Tecno L8 is the battery which is a whooping 5050mAh. Obviously, this means the battery can withstand heavy usage without draining the battery. For users who use their phones a lot through out the day, this is the phone to get for your everyday needs.

Design

The Wiki Slide 2 boosts a beautiful leather-like design. It simply looks nicely sculptured with its metallic frame and sharp edges. Display

The 5.5-inch high definition screen outputs at 720p, which is good to have on a good budget build. It also supports multi-touch.

Alcatel Pixi 4 (5)

Alcatel Pixi 4 (5)

Summary

On the plus side, the Alcatel Pixi (4) has simple but good looks, and runs a newer Android version than other popular budget builds. It has has a processor that will not disappoint on basic tasks and the camera does not look bad either. The main downside on this phone is the battery, which doesn’t look strong enough compared to its rivals.

Design

The Alcatel Pixi 4 (5) features a simple but beautiful design, and it runs on Android Marshmallow. On button placement, the volume rocker and power button are on the right, headphone jack at the top, charging port at the bottom and speaker grill at the back. The side bezels look thin enough to make it look modern.

Display

The 5-inch screen display size is not well complemented by the screen resolution, which is 480 x 854 pixels. This resolution is not so bad in itself, but by modern standards the phone has some catching up to do. Nonetheless, the screen sharpness is appreciable.

Camera

The specs on the phone’s camera look slightly better than what you get on other cheap smartphone builds. This means the pictures may come out good but not great.

The 1.3GHz quad-core processor translates to very responsive performance on average use. So far as your are not putting this phone under too much load, the experience should be generally lag-free.

Storage

Storage on the Pixi 4 (5) is also sufficient and expected on a budget build. A 1GB memory capacity should run most apps just fine. The 8GB internal storage is sufficient for storing everyday apps on the phone and the maximum expandable memory of 32GB is also enough for storing more apps and media files.

Battery

The 2000mAh battery is on the low side. The battery may need daily charge and may not last you the whole day if used actively.

Infinix Hot 4

This addition to the Infinix Hot series, the Hot 4, is an improvement on almost all fronts, as compared to its predecessor, the Hot 3. The Hot 4 has a fingerprint scanner, a much bigger battery, upgraded storage options in addition to other design strengths the Hot 3 already has. This is a must-buy.

Storage
